I'm American, but I want to be a citizen of Ireland as well. What do I need to do to become a dual citizen? How long does the process take?

  1. The US does not acknowledge dual citizenship.  What this means is that if you are a US citizen you cannot become a citizen of another country and still retain your American citizenship status.  Some countries do allow dual citizenship, but the US isn't one of them.

  2. The United States does not allow dual citizenship. If you become a citizen of another country, you must renounce your United States citizenship.

  3. Go to the Irish consulate website for your area and, if you qualify, under consular services look at citizenship. It should allow you to download the forms and give you instructions. Good Luck!

I am a fourth generation Dual passport holder (US + another) and none of us have been arrested yet.

  4. Are you eligible for Irish citizenship through descent?

If not then its difficult to get Irish citizenship. You have to live there for a period of time after getting a visa and whatever their equivalent of a greencard is. I think its pretty similar as our process for citizenship, but not sure how long it takes?

If you are eligible for citizenship through parents/grandparents,  then you just need to prove the relationship and fill out some forms with the Irish embassy and get an Irish passport. Check here for more info on eligibility, the consulate/embassy site should have info on how to get a passport.

The US government does not 'recognize' or encourage dual citizenship but they do NOT prevent it either. If you get into trouble in Ireland or something they don't help you at all, etc but you don't get into trouble in the US for having two passports.
