What hardware do I need a wireless router? a usb wi fi? I need a list of components so I can come up with a price. Is this possible to use a wireless router without a computer being hardwired to the wireless router?

  1. You need a wireless ADSL modem and a wireless network card for your computer so that you can connect to the router.

The wireless modem will cost you between $100 and $200, you might be able to get a second hand one and save some money.

You will also need a wireless network card, this could be a PCI card that you install onto your motherboard so you have an antenna sticking out the back of your computer OR you can get a USB which sort of looks like a thumb drive.

The PCI one is better in my opinion if you are keeping it on one computer as it wont take up USB ports and wont look ugly sticking out.

This will cost you between $20 and $50

Maybe also consider upgrading the antennas on them depending on how far the computer is from the modem and if there are walls in the way.

If wireless does not work, you can use a ethernet over power, this is like an ethernet connection from your modem to your computer, however it is sent through the power cabling in your home.

They will save you the hassle of wireless dropouts and stuff, but they might cost a bit more (i think) but you save from not needing a wireless modem or wireless network card.

Make sure you scroll down a bit to where people are using the newer ones, ive heard the old ethernet over power modules were bad and overheated.

  2. I suggest you buy a wireless router with a wireless adapter (USB or PCI) for you PC.

Or you can relocate your PC close to a phone jack.

  3. Yes, a wireless router will solve your connection question.  I have 3 computers in my home.  One is connected directly to the router at the phone-jack.  The other two are connected through the wireless receivers, which pick-up the RF signal transmitted by the router.  But the Router will work independently when connected to the phone-jack and will transmit a DSL signal throughout your house to any computer with a receiver.

I use the Linksys Wireless-G 802.1 with Speedbooster.  It gives me download speeds very near the original DSL speeds.  Works GREAT, no wires to run, no hassle to connect.  You will need BOTH the router, AND the receiver.
