How do I hook my surround sound system up to my Insight cable box?

I just bought a surround sound system that has a built in DVD player. It plays the DVD's through the surround sound. But we have like HBO and Showtime so we want to be able to watch those movies that we get through our cable box through the surround sound system as well.

the first answer is in correct, there is another way to hook it up besides digital audio, just hook up a regular rca audio cable (red and white) to the cable boxes audio output and the other end into the receivers input.

You need to hook up a digital audio cable from your cable box to your receiver. That is the only way to transfer 5.1 audio short of HDMI. If your unit does not have a digital input there is nothing you can do. You should have gotten a real receiver.
