How do I hook my vcr to my cable box and tv?

I recently moved my furniture around and can't remember how they were hooked up, but I know I was able to record one program while watching another. I've tried running the cable line into the cable box, then into the vcr, then rf out from vcr to tv, but it wouldn't let me set the vcr to record (I would get snow). So I tried hooking the cable line into the vcr, then the vcr to the cable box, then the cable box to the tv, but then nothing comes through the vcr when it's on (I can watch cable tho with vcr off, but get no vcr menu display and can't watch tapes at all with it on). The first way I am able to actually program the vcr but when i shut it off (like it says to do) and it records all I get is snow. HELP!

  1. cable from the wall --- cable box ---- VCR ---- TV

Normally you will use coaxial connection for the ---- part or you can use the composite (yellow, white and red) for a better quality

  2. cable box -  VCR  - TV  in that order
