I know this can be done because you see it in stores no one that I have asked has been able to help though. I am trying to build a rolling speaker system for my garage and have a ton of car audio equipment laying around. Does anyone know what type of converter to use?

  1. You need what is called a 120V AC to 12V DC power supply.

Depending you what kind of system your planning on running (subs?) you might need a bit more juice but for running speakers off the head unit this is what you're looking for. Make sure that the power supply will be able to put enough power to your system. 12v and 10 amps is 120watts, that will power a head unit at low-mid volume. average 50wattsx4 speakers is 200 watts :-p

ps Luca T is close but that's a 12 to 120 (wrong way round)

  2. i dont know

  3. voltage converter b/c the car equipment is made to run on 12v power take a look at this, it may be what you need, but try asking a pro

  4. you will need a 12 volt dc power supply capable of putting out enough power (amps) to power the headunit and any other parts (like amplifiers) you are looking to hookup

common power supplies use half wave rectifies to go from AC to DC.  these can be very noisy on audio equipment.  so a good powersupply is key.

    this one would work:

the one the other poster listed is for going from 12V DC up to 120V AC,  that's called an inverter.  you need to go the other direction.

  5. You need a converter to go from 110v ac to 12 v dc.

Radio shack should have them, but here is one website just

    in case. Hope this helps.
