I just bought a new set of speakers (left, right and center) for an old ~1991 sony amp. It only has 2 sets of L/R speaker connections in the back... Is there any way to rig it up so that I can get the full effect, so to speak? Thanks.

  1. Yes you could but why would you want to. On a a/v receiver that supports 5.1 channels the center is used for people talking. You can buy an a/v receiver for around $150 that supports 5.1 channel. If you already spent money on the speakers you should just buy a new a/v receiver.

  2. you can't

  3. you have to  get to extra wires to splice in to the center speaker

  4. Just "No" is an incorrect answer.

Some amplifiers can be bridged, that means connecting a speaker to the + of one channel and - of the other, It will give you a center channel with the sum of the power of two channels. But that applies to car audio, so NO, if you do that with your Sony you will blow it up.

BUT, there is the correct way to do it

  5. no

  6. Unfortunately your 1991 stereo is just that - a stereo receiver. It's not a surround sound system as you are trying to make it.

I too have an old Sony receiver from the 80's that still sounds and works great but I just use it in the bedroom for listening to the radio and CD's.
