How do I hook up an antennae to my HD projector to get over-the air HD?

So, I have a HD projector and I really want to watch Lost in HD. But I also cannot afford to get HD service from Comcast. I know you can get HD through an antennae, but I cannot figure out how to hook up the antennae to my HD projector without the use of a computer. I see a bunch of HD tuner thingies for a laptop or desktop, but I'd rather not bring my computer into this equation. Is there a box out there that has a regular coax input and HDMI and/or Component out? HD tuners used to exist, but I cannot find them.

  1. I was asking someone that just yesterday, since my HDTV only has an analog tuner. Video receivers made since 2007 are required to have digital receivers, the simplest way to go is to buy a dvd vcr combo or dvd recorder made after 2007.

  2. BE CAREFUL! Just because a dvr was made after 2007 doesn't mean it has the digital capability. But yes, you need some sort of a digital HDTV tuner. The cheapest solution is to find a used directv or dishtv hd receiver or hd dvr receiver. You won't be able to use the satellite feature without a card, BUT you can still use the antenna in to connect an off the air HD antenna.

I did this a month ago for the college football National BCS Title game. I am doing it tomorrow for the Super Bowl. I went to craigslist.com and found a used HD DVR directv receiver for $50. This is the cheapest method.

Your other option is to buy a HD receiver, or as others have suggested, an HD DVR. You can get one at walmart for about $190. I would stay away from the computer tuner, unless you computer is almost brand new and is fairly high end. Computers tend to bog down and 'skip' after a period of time while using the tv tuners. Not to say it can't work, but the easiest and best way would be to get an HD receiver and/or DVR. Good luck!

  3. You can use a dvd recorder. They have built in digital tuners. Make sure it has a coaxial in and hdmi out. Then just plug in your HD antenna and up it will go. Be prepared to spend roughly 200 dollars though.

For myself, I have a Samsung Digital tuner that I got from Best Buy for 150.
