How do I hook up my Xbox 360 Elite to my surround sound system?

I just got my surround sound system and I'm trying to hook it up to work with my 360 and my new 1080p LCD. What I tried was the xbox HDMI cable to the surround sound HDMI-In input and outputted the component (red, white, yellow) cables to the TV since I didn't have an HDMI cable on hand. I had sound but no picture. I am going to get another HDMI cable to output it to the TV (from the surround sound amp) but I don't see what the difference will be since the component cables didn't work (as far as no picture goes). And if I do get the picture, will it still be the same quality being run through an amp?

Maybe the HDMI output from the amp will do the trick but how has everybody else done it?

  1. most surround receivers donot have the ability to convert the various video signals out there - for example plugging your dvd into video rca signal jack (yellow connector usually) will not output on the receivers S-Video output, smae applies to usuing video-in (yellow jack) will not up convert to HDMI.

so you will need another HDMI cable to go from the Receiver to your TV and all should work well.

  2. Try HDMI straight from the Xbox to the TV.

Then an optical cable from the TV to a spare input on the receiver for the better sound.

But if you run HDMI to the receiver, you MUST run HDMI out to the TV from the receiver.

Places like MonoPrice and BlueJeans have good prices for HDMI cables.  These signals are digital so inexpensive cables tend to work just as well as the expensive retail ones.
