I have a an insignia tv with s-video input and a vga input. I have a laptop with a an s-video output (i think). If I connect with an s-video cable, will the sound connect as well? Is the s-video my best option for video quality or is there something else I should be looking for?

  1. I'd find a monitor cable and hook up your equipment through the VGA ports if that's an option.  I did that purely because my S-video in was already in use, but it also looks great at least on my TV.

Neither will connect the sound -- it runs out of a totally different plug on your computer.  You're going to need a separate cord with a mini stereo plug on both ends. . . not terribly hard to find if you ask or look around, although not all stores seem to carry them (Radio Shack always seems to have that sort of thing, at least). . . or you can buy a monitor cable with an audio cable built in that just splits apart to run to the VGA and audio connections at the ends if you want fewer long cables to deal with.

Does your TV have a little audio input spot right next to the VGA port that's not an RCA input?  Mine does, so I'm presuming that's where you're supposed to plug in the other end of your audio as well if you have one.  Otherwise, you need a converter from a mini stereo plug to a set of red/white RCA's, which you can probably find anywhere you found the computer audio cable.

  2. the sound will not connect. you can either use a VGA cable (sound not included). OR the S-video

for the sound, you can use a regular line out from the computer and on the other end of that cable is the RED and WHITE audio outputs. you can pick one up at Radio Shack
