Question:

How do I hook up my modem to a Linksys router?

Right now I've just got the computer hooked up to the modem itself. I don't see how or where the thick telephone looking chord from the router hooks into the modem? I see a USB port but it will not fit in there..

Any help would be greatly appreciated

  1. You need to take the "think telephone cord"--the ethernet cable, from the back of the computer and plug that into the Internet port on the back of your router. You will then need another Ethernet cable to plug from one of the other empty ports on your router into the back of your computer.

  2. Go to the Linksys site and read TFUM.

  3. The "thick telephone cord" you're referring to is called an "ethernet cable" or a "CAT5 cable".  You have to unplug your computer's ethernet cable  from the modem and then plug the computer's ethernet cable into the router into one of the slots on the back of the router labeled "1-4."  Then plug another ethernet cable into the back of your modem and connect that to the slot in the router labeled "WAN"

  4. Please look at your router documentation.  It will tell you exactly how to accomplish your connection.  The thick telephone looking cord is an ethernet cable.

You unhook the computer from the modem.  Plug an ethernet cable from the modem to the router's network port.  Plug a cable from one of the regular ports on the router to your computer.  You'll need to power cycle all the equipment.
