The speakers have it where you hook up split speaker wire, but the receiver only has plug in type. How can I make this work?

  1. It depends on the plug.

If it is a standard banana plug, you can easily put an end on your standard speaker wire and plug it in.

On the other hand, if it is a specialty plug, you'll run into some difficulty.

Some look like they only accept plugs, too. If it is a round red (or black) plastic post with a metal hole in the middle, the plastic on the outside unscrews and you can attach standard speaker wire that way.

I'd have to see it to tell you more.

  2. Get a new receiver. Plug type hookup is generally for all in box pre made systems. Converting the speaker wire to plug is a pain in the A, and the sound will probably be poor. So do yourself a favor and drop a hundred bucks or so at Best Buy and get a new Dolby Digital receiver.

  3. Do you have the long Red & Black k***s on the back of the receiver?  These are called 5-way binding posts.

Un-s***w one of the k***s. It will expose a hole in the side. Insert speaker wire, s***w down and you are done.

WARNING:  Doing a sloppy wire job here can damage your equipment.  Cut the bare speaker wires short and twist and insure no stray strands of copper wire are sticking out to cause a short.

You can put banana plugs on the end of your speaker wires if you want.  Radio Shack sells some nice Bananas that un-s***w into 2 halves and you dont need tools.  This is highly recommended.  I put a link below for you.
