How do I improve my reading speed and my ability to understand academic texts?

At university I did not absorb most of the knowledge at the kind of rate that the university expected and wanted me to, how do I do it?

you can practice reading at home or at school. and while reading try to understand the text literally, read between the lines.. and read beyond it. and whenever you are unfamiliar with a word you can look for it in the dictionary. just keep on doing it until you are good.=]

Practice. When ever i hear a word that i don't understand i look it up in the dictionary
