How do I improve picture quality of my TV when I watch online shows by connecting it to a computer?

I am planning to get a paid subscription to online international channels which I don't get on my cable TV. I want to connect my computer to my TV using an S-video cable and then watch these channels on my TV. However, I have heard that the picture quality usually sucks. Is there a way to improve it? I don't have HD TV. Will it make a difference if I buy an HDTV?

S-video is terrible.

You can purchase a USB adapter that will allow you to output it to your tv or a new HDTV at a higher resolution. They run about $100 and you can find them at most electronics stores.
