How do I incorporate brighter colors into a room with a darker/neutral theme?

I want to put a little color into my livingroom. The main scheme is tan, brown, khaki colors, rich woods and dark objects. I'm trying to find a way to add little hints of color throughout my room without making it feel mismatched. I thought about putting either red curtains with pinstripes of tan and brown, or blue curtains with pinstripes of tan and brown?

The red would look better. You can also think about just adding some colored throw pillows on the couch, that will help add color to the room quietly.
