Question:

How do I increase the amount of water that goes into my cistern?

After flushing, the cistern doesn't seem to take enough water back in. Is there a way to make sure it gets 'full'?

  1. If the check for leaks proves to be not the problem and you can not adjust the cistern float any further there are a couple of things to do;

    You may have a restricted flush cistern which are generally used in septic tank situations so you don't flood the tank. Should you not be on a mains sewage line there may be a good reason for the restricted flow.

    If you are on a mains sewage line have a look inside your cistern and see if there is a plastic wall partition inside or a little holding tank which is restricting how much water can flush at one time. You can safely remove that partition or tank if there is one there and this will fix the problem.

    Good luck with the flush

  2. Sounds like you need to adjust the float. This is designed to cut off the supply when the water reaches a certain level. Most cisterns have the fill line marked on the inside somewhere (but it should be just below the level of the overflow. You adjust the threaded s***w where the contacts the inlet valve (or in the case of brass/copper floats - bend the arm up a bit).

  3. Make sure its not running all the time, and re-filling constantly. Check for holes or leaks. If you cant figure it out, call a professional to help you out!

  4. adjust the ball valve or bend it upwards

  5. Adjust the ballcock cut-off level - just turn the nut at the end where it goes "into the works" - bear in mind there's a small lock-nut to loosen first (and re-tighten afterwards!)
