How do I insert emoticons in my phone for text messaging?

It's a motorola rokr, and it came with some little emoticons in the media under 'pictures' already. I cannot insert them in texting messages, but others can send me the same emoticon in their texts to me. What is going on with that? Thank you.

Try to go write out a text message and look to see if there is options. Select that and then look in there to insert an emotion.  On my phone is it this:  Write out a text-->Options-->Add-->Animation
