When glueing the moulding in place do I put glue in the narrow shallow channel in the middle of the back or spread over the back face. Also do I 'butt join' pieces together or cut the ends at 45 degrees and overlap them?

  1. Is there a reason that you are not nailing the base?  Nailing, especially with a compressor and gun, is MUCH faster, since you don't have to worry about the board falling off the wall before the glue sets up.  As far as joints, The overlap joint you are talking is called a scarf joint, and is the proper way to join trim.  You don't need a 45, though.  When I trim, I use a 30 degree cut.  I lap the joints over a stud so I can nail through the joint, and I use yellow carpenters glue to make the joint stay together.  If you really just want to glue the base to the wall, Put a blob of glue every foot or so, press to the wall, remove it to "burp" the glue, then reapply the base.  Brace the piece for an hour or so to let it set up.  Hope this helps.

  2. Put glue, (sticks like, no nails, pink grip, etc)In a line or a big blob on flat surface on back of skirting about 12 - 18 inch apart, then push onto wall, wall must be clean ie plaster board or plaster, glue will not stick if wall is dusty or just brick (normally), as for corners depends on how confidant you are a mitres, might be easier to just but them rather than trying to scribe the cuts out.
