How do I install Ubuntu if I don't have an operating system?

I have an old set of computer parts, and rather than use a copy of Windows to install Ubuntu, I want to just start with Ubuntu. My question is: When you burn the CD installer, can you load the CD directly onto a blank PC with no OS? If not, how can I find an alternative method?

  1. Yes.  That's kind of the point of burning it to a CD.

If your machine doesn't boot from the CD, change the boot priority in your BIOS to "CD/DVD". It shouldn't matter though, since you have no OS.

Of course, if you want to actually install Ubuntu, you will need a hard drive.  I couldn't tell whether you had one or not.  Even without a hard drive, you can still boot from the live cd, though.

  2. Download the ISO image and use an ISO burning program to burn it to a CD.

Use the CD to boot the machine and Install to your hard drive or run from the Cd.  Both work fine...
