Question:

How do I install base molding where it meet the heat register if the molding is taller?

I would like to install a decorative base molding in my living and dining room. It's much taller than the one we have now (installed by the original builders). I just realized that it is about a full inch taller than my baseboard heat registers. How do I install it - do I just cut the end where it meets the vent square? The start up again on the other side? Or should I try to notch it out so the base molding is continuous? Anyone have any pics I can see of this? Thank you!

  1. You really can do what you want to........cut it up and around...you could put "dutchman''blocks on each side of the reg. and fit the molding to that.......they are just a pretty block 11/4 sq with a eased top....or you can just fit the reg. or if you have a fancy molding return miter it into the wall at the reg. thats nice also........the dutchman or decortive blocks take time and it would be nice to have glue, paint and a nail gun for that type of detail........but it is trick if you have the time. Instead of pics just buy a short piece of fiber board to play with and take a look......if you enjoy that type of work it fun....if painting get yourself some caulking to fill the top of the base so everything looks nice......no gaps showing....find all studs for you gun before you start just guessing and mark them on the floor w/a piece of tape...........good luck.

  2. You have a few choices here. #1, notch the baseboard out to required fit, caulk  and paint it. 2. Buy a smaller register so it fits with the baseboard height without cutting the base. #3,. Depending on type of register,  move the register up an inch and it should work fine.

  3. I'd just cut it flush with the vent cover.
