Question:

How do I install my Jensen 652's in the rear of my '89 Prelude?

I just bought 6 and 1/2 inch speakers to replace the rear speakers in my '89 Honda Prelude. The old ones were 6 and 1/2 inch speakers, and I had the understanding that they are a direct swap with any 6 and 1/2 inch speakers, yet these are wider, and the holes don't line up??? What do I need to get these to fit? Is there a bracket? Where can I buy this bracket?

  1. The problem with an adapter ring may be that they end up sitting too high off the back deck. If the Prelude is anything like the Civic I had, your best bet would be to place the speaker against the hole from underneath, then mark the hole locations. Then you set the speaker to the side, and CAREFULLY drill new holes. Then you can mount the speakers up top using the new holes.  I'm surprised, but a lot of speakers will include some form of a template that you can use as well to mark and drill the holes with. If your speakers don't have that, try hitting up their website and see if they have templates you can print and use.

  2. Usually the speaker has enough pre-drilled hole combinations, but there are times like yours where the speaker is slightly bigger.  (Often happens with oversized 6 1/2's or 6 3/4's.)  Ultimately, you don't want to introduce a "bracket" because you run the risk of speaker vibration and it'll just frustrate you further trying to correct that.  Just use a template (usually the manufacturer has one you can cut out) and mark new holes to drill.  Install is straight forward after you drill the new holes to mount the new speakers.
