we just adopted a new kitten that is 1 month old, but we have a 2 yr old cat, we kept the kitten in a separate room, and we switch them up, like we take the kitten out an put my cat in the room so they get use to each others sent, but one time my kitten ran out an my cat ran up to her an went into a pouncing position , are they just playing or was my cat going to attack her? i tried to let them smell each other before, i held my kitten an put her close to my cat, they touched noses but then my kitten slapped my cat lol, an then after awhile my cat put her paw out too, but when my kitten hit her paw and my cats nails popped out, is that ok? how do i know for sure my cat wont eat my kitten? oh sorry i forgot to say both of them are females

  1. Do you have a cat carrier? Put the kitten inside and put the carrier in the same room as the older cat. Keep an eye on them, but this is a fairly safe way to get used to each other.

The kitten sounds too young to be away from its mother... kittens should be with their mother for 6 weeks...

Right now your older cat may see the kitten as a toy... be careful until the kitten is older...

  2. just like dogs thats how cats play my 2 cats do the same thing let them play around and they will start getting along and offcorse ur old cat will feel wierd cause another cat is in its territori but same with ur new one cause she is in some oher cats territori but let them play they will get along in a week or 2

  3. Hi, I am a Behaviour Cat Volunteer here in San Francisco, When taking a new cat or kitten home, here are some major step to confinement...

First confine the new kitten to a bathroom or a small room where they can not get under the bed (otherwise you will have a hard time to get them out), introduce him to the food, litter, and a warm blanket, please do this at least for 24 hours, until the kitten go to know you.  Also a good time to call the new kitten their new name, and for them to recognize some new tricks.  Treats is a good way to teach them their name, sit, and no...

Once they are relax, confine the residence cat to a room, while the new kitten start spreading their scent arount the house.  Make sure wires and plant are far to reach (some plants are deadly to cats).  Once this are done, put the new kitten back to the confine room, and let the residence cat, get use to the new kitten scent.   Crack the door a little bit, so the 2 cats can get to see each other and start knowing each other.  The other way, is put the new kitten on a cage, so the residence cat can start to smell and play with the new kitten.  Once they start playing, you are home free.  Make sure to give playtime with the new kitten, it help the new kitten to trust is parents!

  4. Continue to keep them in seperate rooms for a while. Let them be in the same room for a few minutes, several times a day.  Your older cat feels that her territory has been invaded, so she will be  jealous for a while. It will take some time, but eventually they should become buddies.

  5. Put them in the same room together, but stay close so you can rescue the kitten if you need too.  You don't mention any hissing or growling, so it doesn't sound as if the older cat was attacking.  It can be upsetting for cats when a new cat is brought in, so it may take a few weeks for everyone to adjust.

  6. Well, we have three cats, and although the younger two came from our momma cat, they all had horrible times getting along at first.

Your adult female will probably not like the kitten for a while, and No! She won't eat her or kill her or anything, although it's perfectly normal for them to maybe fight. I wouldn't stress out, but I wouldn't keep showing particular attention to the kitten when the other is watching. Female cats can be J-E-A-L-O-U-S! I wouldn't worry about keeping them in separate rooms, either. It may take a few weeks, but in about a month they should be okay. They may never be 'friends' and your female will probably have her 'territory' but they won't fight either. Then again, they may fall in love??
