Question:

How do I invest in a certain sector of a certain country?

I've been researching an industry that I think will be doing quite well over the next few years in an African country. But whenever I go to the my etrade account and try to find ETF's that track the industry I find nothing. Moreover, I can hardly find an ETF that tracks the country itself.

Any suggestions?

  1. Suppose you are interested in gold.  You can find gold ETFs, then check their investment portfolios.

Hopefully you can find one with "overweight" holdings in a specific country or region.

What country and what industry?  It's to your advantage to let the world know because that will create the demand from which will spring the desired ETF.

Suppose the best you can do is an ETF for a specific country.  Even though you are not investing in the ideal industry, one highly successful industry in an African country could lift the entire economy.

The other possibility that most of the opportunity is covered by a few specific companies.  Make your own "fund" by investing in each company.

  2. Well, I couldn't find one for a specific country in Africa, but I found one for the Middle East and Africa here http://www.etfmarketpro.com/GAF-SPDR-S-a...

You can invest in countries such as Brazil with EWZ.  Hope this helps in some way.

  3. First ask yourself if there are any publicly traded stocks from that country in that industry. If the answer is no, you are out of luck.  If the answer is yes, then buy stock in those companies. Forget the ETF stuff.  ETFs need to have a bunch of large cap stocks to invest in or a large variety of small cap stocks.  Unless the African country is South Africa, you will not find too many investment opportunities.
