For example lets say I wanted to buy some stock in Yahoo!. How can I go about buying some stock and then later selling it? What about anything in between? Sorry if I'm being vague.

  1. There are many ways to do it.  The most common form is to deduct the money for a 401K.  Another common way is to put money into a mutual fund.  If you want to deal with single stocks, you can call (you will find them in the yellow pages) a stock broker.   If you believe you can handle things on your own, you can sign up for a variety of online stock brokers which are generally much cheaper than the kind you call on the phone.

  2. first, signup with scottrade (best in my opinion)

and you do a limit order buy YHOO and the number of share you want

you can do another limit order sell when you feel you should sell it.

it's not hard, it all about get in at the right time and get out at the right time.

do not be greedy. and be patient
