Question:

How do I keep critters out of my window well?

I recently had an egress window installed in my basement. It is a hard plastic well, with a gravel bottom and a solid fiberglass (?) cover. The cover is always kept closed. Unfortunately, in the two months I've had this window, I've had to pull two deceased field mice out of the well on two separate occasions, which is unpleasant considering the amount of large wolf spiders who've called my window well home (and are reproducing). Is there any way to discourage mice and/or spiders from getting into my window well, short of constant applications of rat and spider poison?

  1. Ortho makes a spray that kills all bugs & you only have to apply it every 3 mos. I spray the perimeter of my house in March, June & Sept. & don't worry about bugs coming in. It should take care of the spiders.

As for the mice, this is going to sound bizarre, but you can buy urine at farm supply stores. I'm pretty sure fox urine will scare away the mice. You basically squirt it on the ground around the window. It smells super disgusting when you're doing it. But it does keep prey like mice, rabbits, etc. away.

  2. You can keep critters out of your window well by sprinkling Diatomacious earth inside your window well. It will kill most pest and your mice will stay away.  Do not buy swimming pool filter grade. Buy your Diatomaceous earth from Hardware Store or Homecenter.

    Good Luck

  3. Try mothballs but do not put a lot of them out as you will be able to smell them in the basement.

Get a cheap box at one of the Dollar Stores.
