How do I keep my 13yr old dog from sneeking into our unfinished basement to relieve herself?

I have bleached the concrete floors to try to kill the sent. There will inevitable be opportunities for her to get to the basement.. I am hoping for some sort of repellent or good neutralizer, or some discipline ideas. Thanks so much

  1. I would think at 13-years-old it could probably be incontinence, and your vet could give something like Proin to help build the bladder.  Maybe she is trying to drown out the strong smell of bleach.

  2. Try pepper- black, red, pepper seeds- they keep my dogs from even getting close to my living room (and new couch!). I grind up black  pepper & red pepper  seeds & put small, unnoticeable amounts on the hardwood before the carpet. They sniff once, & remember where that unpleasant sensation came from! Keeps squirrels out of  my bird feeder & cats off the counter, too.

  3. Dear Mybell, As our beloved pets age, they realize they no longer have the youth and strenghth to battle an enemy or any agressive animal. As younger pets, they would cover or hide any scent left to avoid detection.Females would eat any puppy expuls.Your pet realizes that it's difficult to cover anything now, with age and inclimate weather, she'll find an area that she feels can not be detected by enemies, real or imagined. I give this advice to my "customers".take your pet out and find an area that's convien. for pet. You,hopefully you're a guy, urinate in area and make pet aware of what your doing. You may have to do this a few times but pet will get used to area. Believe it or not, this was taught years ago in Vet. coll.Good luck and show some kindness as your pet is 13. Give her a hug and pat for me.

  4. Ammonia is in bleach....and it's in pee.  Your dog smells the pee downstairs and wants to pee there.  I would suggest getting a enzymatic cleaner....it will eat the smell.  Keep a better eye on your dog and when she tries to go towards the basement area say *NO* in a really loud voice then take her outside to pee...reward her for going outside....this will teach her that basement=bad and outside=good.

  5. If need be put a baby gate at the top of the basement steps to detour her from going down there. Or if there is a door, make sure it is always shut.

  6. shut the door or install a baby gate to prevent her from going down there.
