Question:

How do I keep my Jack Russell pup from getting himself hurt?

Sometimes, when my dog goes outside (he can go in and out as he pleases), he will come in with sores and sometimes will be bleeding and look like he got into a fight with something. It doesn't seem to bother him, though. I do have another dog (a German Shepherd who weighs 100 pounds more than he does) whom he plays very rough with. They will gnaw on each other and the like, but he comes back with his happy bark and his tail wagging and gets chewed on some more!

If I take him out to go to the bathroom, he just goes and walks back in with me, no problem. If I could go out with him every time, I would, but if the back door isn't open and someone is home, he will pee in our bathroom (on the toilet.. it's actually a little funny) instead of "asking" to go out.

But how can I keep him from getting himself hurt outside when I cannot watch him? Also, how can I help his sores heal?

  1. Jack Russell's are aggressive by nature. They were bred to catch and root out vermin. They will burrow into the ground and if they see a prospective prey, they are very single minded and will go after it. I think that they need to be supervised at all times. They are very active dogs and need a lot of interaction. If they don't get it, they will get into mischief. They are known to go after cats.

  2. He's obviously in a street gang.  You should move, to get him out of that environment, before he gets hurt.  Trust me, I'm a doctor, I know.

  3. i too have a year old jack russell its important they have lots of distractions and lots to do.  they need lots of exercise and playing i recommend a playpen too when you not there and seek a vet about the sores to make sure they don't come infected :)

  4. My daughter has a jack russell and I watch it for her every day while she is at work because she gets into every thing they have a lot of energy and love to play. I also have a dog and the two of them play rough but I am here to watch them so they dont get crazy, if you dont have a person to watch your dog I would suggest making a pen so you can keep your jack russell inside it while it is out doors until you get home. As for his sores I dont know how bad they are maybe take him to the vet and they have ointment to put on the sores to help them heal faster.

    Good luck
