  1. When you own this kind of a bird you will get bit from time to time however, when it bites you and you back away and act like you are afraid of him/her it teaches them that when they bite you leave which is what they want at the time so by backing away you are training it to bite. If it gets too much try putting on a glove and let him know you are not going away, the biting will stop when he knows you are not going to give up. This worked with mine when he started biting. Too many people get rid of bird for this reason and more times than not they are wonderful birds that just need a little work, hang in there!

  2. give it away...

  3. Do not allow the bird to bite you again.  This becomes habitual.

Buy Sally Blanchard's "The Parrot Handbook" and Google - Nurturing Dominance.

You must stop this so you can build a trust relationship with your bird.

  4. I find that showing fear is a sure-fire way to get bitten. When they bite, you can very gently grab their beaks and say something like "gentle!" or "no bite!" They are very smart and will figure out that their way of disciplining you will not work, if you react calmly.

As for the first guy's answer to "get rid of it..." please don't listen to that. Your Amazon will be a loving companion, he just needs to get to know you. :)

  5. Well first of all learn to respect the bird's space. Your amazon probably needs time to acclimate to your home, you should never reach out to your bird. And knowing you may get bitten. To allow your bird time to get used to you you have got to leave it alone for a month or 2. Go slowly at the bird's pace. I usally let the bird out of the cage then sit around offering it treats and time to get to know me. Your bird does not like you right now so leave it alone. Don't make your bird being tamed so important to you that you get bitten or your feelings hurt when the bird doesn't warm up to you. Some birds pick out who in the house hold they want to love and feel safe with, so take your time with this one.

  6. There is no possible way to train your amazon to never bite you, but you can decrease how often he/she does by training him/her that biting is bad.

Every time your bird bites tell him/her that he is going on a timeout and but him in a cat carrier/box (you could use the cage, but there are probably toys he could play with that defeat the purpose of punishment) for 10-15 mins. Remember, the time out has to be long enough so that he/she realizes that it is punishment, but not so long that it is more harmful that good.

After the 10-15mins is up, take the bird out and tell him/her "no more biting". Of course, you will be bitten again many times before your bird understands, but each time he/she bites, do the same thing. Eventually he/she will take the hint.
