Question:

How do I keep my cat out of my newborns bassinet?

My 8 year old cat always jumps in my newborns bassinet and I don't know how to get him to stop. When my middle daughter was born, he did the samething, but he would lay at the foot of it. With my new baby, he lays right by her head at first and then he stretches and lays right up against her face. I try closing my door, but our door k***s aren't the round ones, so all he has to do is jump up and fall on the door k**b and my door opens. Any suggestions on how to keep him out of it. And I'm not going to get rid of him, there has got to be a way to keep him out,

  1.   First change the door k**b. Second why not buy your cat a new basket and put in one of the babys' blankets inside with the babys' smell on it. I would not get rid of the cat either, and as far as allergys, i think kids that have cats and dogs around build up their immune system not weaken it.

Find a place in the house where the family hangs out and place his basket on something that is about the same height as the Bassinet, he has his own bed , baby is safe and your cat is once again ruler of his domain :).....Good luck and congrates on the new baby :

  2. hhmm

    try replacing the doorknobs

    and locking the door

  3. Well, first thoughts first--he poses no real risk to the baby. Apparently he loves the smell of the baby and wants to bond with her. I knew people who had old-wive's-tales and superstitions about cats taking the breath out of babies, but of course none of that is true.

So you may decide to let him camp out on the bassinet and the problem will be solved. If you are totally opposed to this solution you will be jeopardizing your cat's relationship to your baby.

Here's a thought...get a can of compressed air that is used to clean keyboards and electronics. When ever the cat goes into the bassinet, spray the air toward him. Cats hate the sound and will jump away. It probably won't take more than two or three times to run him off.

But remember that no matter what happens he wants to be part of the family and is just displaying love, not any kind of threat, to your baby.

Good luck to your new family!

  4. You could fit a crib net to stop him jumping in next to the baby. These must be taut when fitted or the cat may use them as a hammock.

  5. replace the door k**b, you don't want a cat around a newborn since, the baby may develop allergies or catch something.

  6. close the door and get a baby monitor. do not let the cat in the room

at all. when u leave the house close the door.
