How do I keep my cell number when switching services?

I am switching from TMobile to Verizon and I want to keep my number. I know that this is possible, but do I have to cancel my T-Mobile service first? Or do I activate Verizon and THEN discontinue my T-Mobile service? Thanks.

  1. you just have to tell them you want to keep your number.

  2. It is called "porting" your number. Your new service provider should have all the details.

  3. This process is called "porting".  First of all do not cancel you T mobile service.  What happens is when you go to Verizon to activate your account, they will port your number to their company and to your new phone through them.  Once the port process is complete, your T mobile will automatically be cancelled and you don't have to call or do anything else with them.  Check and see if you have a termination fee with T mobile as well.  Once you cancel they will charge this fee unless you are already out of contract.

In order for the port to take place, though, you will need you account number from T mobile.  Either find the number on a past bill otherwise call them and ask for it.  Don't tell them why you're asking for it though, otherwise they will keep you on the phone forever to try and keep you with them :) believe me I know.

After that everything else is done.  T mobile will send you a final bill with all outstanding charges and termination fees, etc.

  4. Do not cancel your t-mobile service first!  If you do so, you could lose your number.  Instead, call Verizon first and inform them you want to switch and keep your number.  The rest should take care of itself.  Good luck!
