Question:

How do I keep my chickens quiet in the morning?

They wake me up in the morning and I'm worried that they are doing the same with our very nice neighbors. Any suggestions on how to make them cackle less in the morning? I have just hens but they do make a lot of noise.

  1. Umm, i have many chickens as well and they naturally do that in the morning and thats just their instinct. usually the saying is that the rooster will "c**k a doodle doo" in the morning but they do it all the time to show dominance in other chickens. we have a pecking problem in our coop and put a cabbage in the coop which distracts them and they peck at it. you cant really stop them from making noise. you can try to the cabbage. but chickens are just like that

  2. Hm well there a few things you can do . . .

Basically hens become active and start to make noise as sooon as they start to lay in the morning and when it is getting light outside

and hens only cackle when they have just layed eggs!

so my suggestion would be to either

    (a) let them out as sooon as it is light/morning

    (b) make sure their house lets no light in (but plenty of ventilation obv)

  3.

have them for supper the night befor

  4. maybe insultate the coop more.  they will still make noise, but the insualtion will help to dampen the sound.

  5. I don't know where you keep them but if some how you can cover their cage so they will still think it's dark out.

  6. My grandmother lives in Mexico, so she deals with this all the time. She usually puts them in a cage, and she puts a big blanket over it.

  7. Well that's the way chickens are, their day starts very early at the first hint of dawn ,trick them into thinking it is  not quite daylight, choice of method is up to you ,  letting them out pretty early involves taking yourself out at that time in the morning which is'nt an enviable proposition.

I feel safe letting out my birds only when it is bright enough & the first signs of sunlight are to be seen this way there are less chances of predators slinking in the vicinity .I try to keep them occupied by leaving a little grain scatterd around so they can be busy for a while ,but hens will be hens they will never be quiet enough to allow a lie-in .

  8. Make sure the coop is as dark as possible without affecting the ventilation.

Personally, I love the sound of my chickens announcing they've laid an egg and the way the chatter amongst themselves in the morning.

You could always offer your neighbours some fresh eggs to stay in their good books!

  9. like other people said, cover their cage at night.

You want to give your neighbors some free eggs, That way if they get woken up by the hens they will think of the free eggs.
