Question:

How do I keep my downstairs loo from smelling like a public toilet?!!!?

I have children, so accidents and missing the loo is inevitable, however, whatever I do - bleaching, toilet duck, Bloo etc, nothing gets rid of the smell.

The bottom half of the wall and the floor are tiled and my sister thinks pee may have soaked into the grout, but soaking the floor in bleach for an hour doesn't help either.

I would be grateful for any solutions!

  1. I have the same problem and the culprits are my 2 boys.  I clean it every night with toilet duck and wipes.  I also have one of those air freshners in there that sprays every 9 or 18 minutes.  I now have a lovely smelling loo!

  2. I have an aunt who had this same exact problem.  She said that the smell was in her grout, too.  She got something called ODORBAN.  It's comes in a spray bottle, like 409 or any other cleaner and she says it works.  She swears by it now.  It's worth a shot if you've tried everything else.  It's probaby less than 5 bucks.

  3. Suggest Neutradol air freshener, its can actually cure smells wherever they are hiding.

  4. Could be a combination of odors.

As well as actually the loo plumbing its self.

You can use a black light to check for urine soaked into tiles and grout. If in grout you will need to neutralize urine something like "odor mute" the grout would need sealing after thoroughly removing odor and drying.

Perhaps  white vinegar would be best.

You can even try placing a small amount white vinegar about a cup full behind the loo on the floor over night. Even a box of baking soda might help.

    Best to ya.

  5. Dont let the neighbors uze it, only jkiddin just cant understand how a toilet in the houses would smell like a public one feshen it up with nice blooo loooo or green loooo and nice air freshner.

  6. sounds like you need something that will soak it out of the grout, leaving bleach on it will add more liquid moleculs which will make it spread more.

spray the floor lightly with hot water to moisten the grout and try bicarb of soda over your floor for a day or so open a window and put vinigar around the bowl

let me know if it helps

  7. Clean it.

  8. I have had this problem in my kitchen where I have slate floor.  My male dog has had many accidents on it and sometimes when we have been out of town it goes unnoticed by the person taking care of our dogs so it will end up sitting on there for a week.  This may be a lot of work but this should fix your problem, and make future cleaning much easier.

Go to a Home Depot or Lowes and get a tile or grout cleaner that suites the type of tile that you have.  Using a scrub brush, clean the entire floor as best you can and let it dry.  Then apply a tile and grout sealer (one that suits your type of tile).  This will prevent future mishaps from soaking into your tile and grout by adding a layer of protection to it.  I usually do 2 coats.  If the mess seeped underneath your toilet than you may want to disconnect the toilet from the floor, to clean that and treat it as well.  Any sub floor underneath that that is exposed you can take Kilz primer and go over that (it kills and seals off odors).  You will have to get a new wax ring for the toilet when you put the toilet back in place.  I know it sounds like a lot of work but it will fix your problem.  Good Luck.

  9. Since you have tried a lot of what I would suggest I think the urine may have leaked underneath the base of the toilet and is now in you underlayment or sub-flooring.  Pretty much where you can't clean.  Check to see if any of the grout is old and cracked around the toilet.  As you won't be able to see if any urine seeped under the toilet unless you remove the toilet itself, that's another story.  I would have a plumber come in and check this for you.

In the meantime, I would make sure everyone in the household sits to pee, even the guys.  lol  And have a new rule, you miss... you clean!
