Question:

How do I keep my neighbors off my land?

My neighbors "take their dog for a walk" on our 20 acres of land every night. We are building a new house on that land and they keep coming up there to "check things out" Even when we are up there, it does not deter them! They just keep right on coming. They wave and keep right on walking, And the best part..... I have to put my dog in my car because they have the audacity to get upset when my dog barks or growls at them. Are you kidding me? On MY property?

The reason I feel like I can't tell them to stop....... those neighbors are my boss and his wife. How do I tell them to stop without causing trouble at work?

It is driving me crazy that we can't even relax on our own property because we have to worry about them coming up with their dog every night. Its ridiculous that I have to put my dog in my car just to keep their dog happy.

HELP!!!

  1. That's a real toughie =/

But the thing is it's your yard, not there's, and your boss has no right to fire you because you refuse to allow him to push you around. He is taking advantage of you so obviously.  I'd leave your dog out, and if he asks you to put it in your car, say you won't. If you have to deal with them coming on your property, they can deal with the dog barking at trespassers as he is supposed to.

    That is ridiculous.

OR. Start walking on their property.

  2. Put up a fence.  Good fences make good neighbors.

  3. I'll give you the answers that the police gave me in a similar situation. Put up a no trespassing sign. Then talk to them. If they insist on acting the same way, get the authorities involved. If you get fired from it, you have the right to sue them for those actions. I just hope that you are able to fix this without getting police involved.

  4. You have a perfect inroad to have a polite chat with someone about the dog situation.  Let the wife know that you will be letting your dog run around your property and that you would not want any issues to arise, so it would be better if they refrain from walking across the property.   Then proceed to put up signs that say "NO TRESPASSING" and "BEWARE OF DOG".

  5. Put up a fence and place a sign NO TRESPASSING or call the police next time he trespasses or tell another member of your family to do it or talk to his wife.Hopefully she has a conscience.

Or simply come up to him and tell him to keep his dog and his **** of your land.

I had a problem with my neighbors dog so i payed him a visit and politely said to him to keep his dog under control and he agreed and that was that. You can do it the easy way or the hard way.

  6. Its called NO TRESPASSING signs and then call the law.

  7. By all means, leave your dog out.  If they get upset when your dog makes noise, explain to them that your dog is just "defending his terriitory and doesn't really care much for other dogs.  We'd actually prefer you left your dog at home because he is upsetting our dog."

I do hope that your boss/neighbor has the courtesy to pick up after his dogs.

  8. Post the no tres. signs and let your boss know that your dog will be having free reign over the 20 acres so they might want walk elsewhere to avoid a dog fight. There will be a few hard feelings here ( my husband and I have 23 acres and have been through similar things) but you have the right to peaceful enjoyment of your home. Keep in mind though, the activity on your property might be the only excitement in a mainly rural area.

  9. Stop putting your dog in the car.

They've probably been walking there a long time, and it's going to take some time for it to sink in, and he probably does feel some sense of ownership over you.

You don't have to ask them to stop, you just don't have to be so accommodating.  Just wave and go about your business.

As the building progresses, and you are there more often, they will start to change their path.  If not, I would appeal to the wife first.

  10. Maybe they are just interested in the house.  People are naturally curious creatures.  We were the 10th house in a new subdivision, so our nightly walks also consisted of touring partially built homes, and before we moved in, we ran into people touring our house all the time.

If you're going through a contractor who owns the land, you may not have any recourse until you close on the house and it's officially yours.

As an earlier answerer wrote, stop putting your dog in the car and make sure your boss knows that his dog is going to have to get used to yours if they are going to continue walking on your property, so you might as well introduce them properly and let them get to know each other.

Is the fact that it's YOUR property what's so bothersome to you, or is it the fact that you feel they are being nosy?  Partially built and abandoned houses are going to be objects of people's curiosity.  That's why they put locks on them, but once someone moves in, people don't come over and peek in windows, so just let them watch the progress of your house and leave it be.  The problem may solve itself when you move in.

Is walking across your 20 acres of land really going to harm you, the land, or them?  If not, leave it be.
