How do I keep my parakeet from biting?

I've had him for a little over a year now. Although he will sit on my finger and stuff, he always bites if I try to pet him. The only place he will let you touch him is in his breast area, and you have to be very slow. Approaching his sides, his back, and his head will almost guarantee you a bite.

How do I stop him from doing this? My old parakeet never bit anyone.

You just have to be persistent, give him "timeouts" in his cage if he bites.

It is a natural thing birds do, and each bird is an individual. You can't really    compare him to your previous bird.

In time he'll stop. You have to be with him all the time and get him used to being petted. Eventually he'll stop being aggressive. I used to tap it with my fingers on its beak/head and it would get the message.. or just keep his beak shut to teach him that it's wrong.

You should have hand-tamed him from a young age, you might be lucky and still be able too, but chances aren't high, i recommend just to spend more time with him and talk to him calmly , so he will quickly learn to trust you.

Put something in it's cage that it can rub his beak against.  Also, get him used to seeing you and you being close to him.  After that, you can try just laying your hand next to his cage while you are reading or something and he will get used to your hand being near him. After that, go on from there.

try substituting your finger for something nasty tasting to him - once he bites that a few times maybe he'll stop biting whatever touches him.  You train a horse to stop biting by letting it accidentally bite a hot potato instead of your hand.

While, all you can do is to say "no" firmly to it when it attempts to bite.
