Question:

How do I keep my scooter from dying when I relase the throttle??

Every time I release the throttle my scooter (a Malaguti Yesterday) dies so to keep it from dying I keep the throttle open (pulled back), but it feels like I am wasting a lot of gas. Should I get the idle set higher?? Is there a way to do it myself?

Thanks!

  1. I wouldnt just adjust the idle s***w, because the machine may run properly at mid-high RPMs, but may have fuel mixture problems. If you are not comfortable with adjusting Fuel/Air mixture screws, then i would inquire with your local dealership.

  2. Take it back to your dealer and tell them you want it fixed

  3. I agree with a couple of these other people- but although there is a way to do it yourself, there is not one that we can explain on here. There is more than one "s***w" on your carburetor, and turning the wrong one can mess things up bad enough that idling will be the least of your problems. Take it to the shop, tell em your problem, and they can do it for you. A Yesterday has bodywork that covers the carb, so they may have to pull it off, and may well charge you for it.

My question to you is: how and/or when did this problem start?  Did you leave the scooter parked for a length of time or do you ride it regularly and all of a sudden it stopped idling? The mechanic will ask these things because the path he takes will be determined by your answers.  At the worst you may need a carb teardown to clean it, at best it's just s******g the idle s***w in a bit.

If manually rolling back the throttle grip (and holding it) is done just enough to make the bike idle at normal RPM, you're not wasting gas. RPMs produced by rolling the grip are the same as RPMs produced by the idle circuit. Blipping the throttle is not only obnoxious and useless, but that WILL waste gas.

Though wasting gas on a scooter of that size is pretty hard to do- even at wide-open throttle it gets a billion MPG!

  4. check carb

  5. If it's dying, you need to set it to be faster.  And then you need to figure out why it died before you set it higher. Because the first thing that needs to be done is set the idle speed back to normal.  Did you get some bad gas lately or from a different gas station, or something?   If you have a Malaguti, I assume you are in Europe, somewhere.

You may need new plugs, or points / condenser or what have you.

At the auto parts store, can you find a can of Sea Foam?  If you can add it to the fuel, and run it normally. until it is time to refill it with gas.  Fill it and see if you can slow the idle back down, if you can fine, the Sea Foam did its work.  you might want to put an ounce or two in at every fillup.  Go ahead and do the sparkplug(s) before the next fillup too.. If it is still running poorly (with the idle set back to normal), then I'm afraid it is the carburetor.

Take it to a mechanic or pull the carb off it and rebuild it. Get the shop manual, so you can set it back to spec.

  6. set the idle rpm higher...yes there is...read your service manual it'll tell you

  7. Follow the throttle cable. There will be a idle s***w at the carb.  Turn the idle until it stays on.

    good luck...
