Question:

How do I keep my self and children safe when my puppy has worms?

We just adopted a 7 week puppy, I know it is too young but it was not being taken care of (Being left outside with it's mother all day and night, infested with flea and being eaten by fire ants)

We took him home and bathed him, gave him flea meds and a de-wormer. We know he has worms (we can see them when he poops) But we can't get him to a vet until Friday, about a week away. So we don't know what kinds of worms he has and the de-wormer that we have only kills roundworms. (The Multi-wormers say the dog has to be 9 weeks)

We don't let my son eat off the floor, which is hard since he's 20 months, we vacuum and mop atleast once a day and launder all the blankets the puppy sleeps on.

Besides the constaint washing of our hands, is there anything else we can do?

We all really love this little guy, but with a young one and me due to have another in three weeks I am driving my self crazy with worry.

  1. yes it sounds like he has hookworms...if you can get to a vet i would recommend going to petmeds and buy some drontal plus...this is the web page for it..it is what a vet will give you...and it takes care of most worms that effect pups and dogs..

    http://www.1800petmeds.com/Drontal+Plus-...

i hope this helps on that

as to keeping yourselves from getting them, i would recommend sterilizing things where he lays, poops, pees .. i use a mixture of 3 parts water, 1 part bleach and a squirt of dish soap...In a gallon...Don't use on carpets...

on carpets get a pet stain remover for soiling on carpets..

    hope this helps..

Edit---human kids do NOT get dewormed every few months...that is a rediculass statement to tell anyone...and you can get hookworm, roundworm, tapeworms, cocidia from dogs and pups as it is a parasite and can transfer if you alow the child to play in un sanitized area where the pup poops...the eggs will live dorment outside of the up for awhile and gan transfer to other dogs/pups and humans...

also if you get meds from petmeds i would still have a stool sample done to rule out anything majore...

  2. Worms are spread thru fecal matter, or rather when you ingest fecal matter, or something that has been contaminated with fecal matter.

Designate a "play" area and a "potty" area in your yard to avoid contaimination.

Clean up all fecal matter ASAP

Wash hands after cleaning up after the pup, after handling the pup, and before preparing food or eating.  This is a good time to teach your son to "clean up" before eating.. and make it a rule that food and drinks should be at the table or high chair (this will also prevent the puppy from getting extra "treats" that he shouldnt have as well).

Good hygene is the best prevention.

Your son is not going to get worms from cuddling with the pup, playing or having his face licked.

  3. You also need to have the puppy tested for other parasites like giardia and  coccidia, both of which are also contagious to people.  Besides being very careful now, I'd be sure to have the carpets steam cleaned after the puppy is house broken.

  4. Bad planning getting a puppy now, but since you have, get him to the vet to have his stool checked and the worms identified - dewormers are specific, you need the right meds from the vet.

As to can you and your kids get the worms --- highly unlikely unless you or your kids eat the dog poo -- that's how it is transmitted.

Make sure your kids wash their hands after they play outside or with the pup, you do the same.   Not much real danger of species cross contamination with parasites.

  5. Just make sure you wash your hands regularly and don't let the pup l**k your faces.

Pet store bought wormers are a waste of money they are not effective, you really need to get them from the vet, they can give you the correct dosage fot the weight of the pup.

Make sure you clean up all the poo and flush it down the loo, worm eggs can lay dormant in soil for up to one year and can reinfest your dog or any others that come into contact with them.

  6. well honestly if you want to can take the puppy to the vets and they can get the puppy 1 dose of womer and then 2nd dose you give them when they right the date down for the puppy!

another factor to think about is that there are some parasites that can be passed on to humans – especially to children, who in many cases have a lot of contact with their pets. Therefore deworming is extremely important. Dogs must also be de-wormed of external parasites such as, fleas, ticks, and lice since these can severely irritate your dog's skin and coat because they feed off of the dog's blood, another down side to these parasites is that they also cause animals to lose weight, damages their coats, and causes a lot of allergic reactions. Even though most external parasites are not contagious to humans, there is one and this can be transmitted to humans and cause the same type of lesions on humans.

it depends on what kind of worms your puppy has there are like 4 different kind of worms for dogs.

    Tapeworms

    Roundworms

    Hookworms

    Whipworms

you can buy this but honestly i don't know where you can get it. it might be at petco or petsmart im not real sure though. my dogs i got from a breeder or a shelter and they was already de-wormed so i didn't have to worry i just took them back for the 2nd dose thats all.

Panacur (fenbendazole) is used to treat hookworms, roundworms, tapeworms, and whipworms in dogs. Panacur is to treat other parasites as well. Panacur is available as 1gm, 2gm and 4gm powder packets.

  7. All puppies have worms and if your baby was wormed before you brought him home this is what you saw in his stools. Get a good all round puppy wormer and treat about every six weeks to start with, also treat yourself and children at the same time. Your pharmacist will advice you on a good human wormer...children should be wormed every three to six months so get into a routine of doing the whole family on a regular basis and you will not have a problem.
