Question:

How do I kill house mice without my dogs biting the poisoned (slow moving) mice and then sickening them ?

I live near a canal (within 100 ft) that has hundreds of holes in the sides of the decline leading to the water seemingly from racoons, or God knows what... I think I have a "small" mouse problem (truely) I just find 2 or 3 droppings once a month or so... but I hear a lot of noises sounding like baby racoons from under the solid foundation of my house.

I want to kill mice without killing my dogs from going after the poisoned mice, and how do I know the difference between the sounds of (say) baby racoons and baby mice ?

  1. Use humane trapas and realease the mice away from your house.  Put the mouse back if it is lactating though.

  2. I think the best bet would be not to kill the mice. I say this because yes, I do hate killing any animals, but mostly because it's dangerous. It's dangerous to your dog to use the snap traps and the poison. Plus, if the mice happen to be in your walls when they die, that could stink up your house.

Humane traps are always a good option, IMO. You could also purchase something called "Shake Away" which you shake in the areas where the mice tend to go. It has the scents of bobcats, foxes.. predators that mice fear. This will drive them out and you won't have to worry about hurting your dog.

  3. mouse trap in weird places, and those cages that just trap them in it, for raccoon. my dad put mouse trap in oven, and micro wave, it was one of those stove connected ones, and next morning, a dead mouse in both

  4. As the first person said, set humane traps, with bait like, peanut butter, fruit, carrots, and some more bate that rats like. Some people set cheese, but it is really not the best bait for them, and it isn't that healthy for them, so, I use peanut butter, because if you get a smarty that knows how to get the food without getting captured (very rare), they can get stuck on the peanut butter, and the trap can close.
