How do I know how old a debt is?

How do I find out the original date of a debt? I know the statute of limitations in my state but don't know the date of the original debt and am having a hard time finding that info

  1. The clock doesn't start from when the debt is acquired. It starts from when you last acknowledged the debt.  


  2. Statute of Limitations (SOL), the timeframe to bring lawsuit, typically starts from the date of last activity or last payment.

    Do you have old account statements or bank account records showing the last payment?  Have you check your credit reports?  Sometimes the last payment date will show there.

    You could try contacting the original creditor to see what records they have.

  3. The SOL starts with the last payment you made to that company (example: if your last payment to Verizon was 1/2002 then it will be on your report till 1/2009) The original date of debt doesn't have anything to do with SOL at all.
