How do I know if I'm in the property zone that permits livestock?

  1. Call your city government.


  2. Call your local zoning board or visit them and get a zoning map.

    You could also see if your neighbors have livestock. That would make it an easy YES.

  3. County websites differ greatly and so your county may have that available online. Mine does not.

    The best thing to do is call the Zoning Department. Mine is listed under the "Government Listings" in the phone book under "Permit and Resource Management" under County (not City). They will be able to tell you the proper zoning. I would also ask them to describe the specific zoning for you. My old residence was zoned residential but you were only allowed 1 pet and no livestock. Some allow more pets. So, it's always good to ask.

    You can also see what your neighbors are doing, but keep in mind that they don't always get it right. My parents live in a golf course community - so yes, zoned residential. Their neighbors have chickens, a cow (that got loose and ran down the street) and a goat. Yes, animal control has been there and the animals have been removed. They obviously didn't know the zoning. ;)
