Question:

How do I know if I need new rollerblades or just if the wheels are too worn out?

I bought new rollerblades a few years ago and used them all the time. After I had my kids, I put them away. I've just gotten them out again and after rollerblading for about 10 minutes, my feet hurt so bad right down the center that I can hardly take it. I'm not sure if I just need new wheels - they are worn down but doesn't seem like they are totally worn out, or do I need new rollerblades? Maybe my feet got wider after I had my kids? My feet seem to fit fine in the rollerblades though, I can wiggle my toes and they are comfortable right when I start out. I just hate to spend the money on new wheels if I actually need new rollerblades. Any advice would be great - thanks!

  1. It's highly unlikely that there is a problem with the roller blades or the wheels (of course there's nothing wrong with getting a new set of wheels if you want - might help you feel better about the skates and be more enthused).

    It sounds to me much more like your muscles have regressed so they aren't as strong as they once were. Perhaps when you started the first time, you were already fit and active, maybe doing some running or something, but since having kids, you haven't been all that active. This likely means that you are going to have to just get your muscles used to the activity again.

    After a few months away, muscle memory will help your muscles get back up to speed quickly. After a few years, you might have to start pretty much at the beginning again. You will have the skill that you remember, but the muscles in your feet will need retraining so you don't get sore...

    I'd guess at 3 weeks to a month... Don't overdo it, just do a bit at a time and try to extend the amount of time that you go blading each time. If you are regular, this will just be a distant memory before you know it.... Heck, you probably already went through it once, but forgot about it.
