  1. If the house still has the original windows in it, they need to be replaced. Materials, and technology is light years ahead of what was available back then.

  2. Several strong indicators of time to replace your windows are:

Drafty feeling when no fans are running

Frost on the inside surface of the glass

If you can see light between the window sash and the frame in the full closed position.

Modern technology of the window industry has made many improvements.  Double pane and even triple pane windows.  Gas filled spacers.  Vinyl materials that shrink and swell very little if at all.

Look at the cost to replace you old windows verses what you can save each heating/cooling season by replacing the old windows.

In 30 years the technology improvements and the new window components themselves should save you at least 20% on your energy costs.  At that rate how long would it take you to regain the expense of the replacements.  And what is your additional comfort worth to you.

I have been installing windows and doors for 25 years and the time has never been more right than it is now.

    BUT YOU HAVE TO DECIDE...

    GOOD LUCK!!!

  3. i would say replace them no matter what 30 years ago windows sucked now days they have energy efficen windows and let me tell you there worth every penny they pay for there self in the long run

  4. If theyt are rotting and dropping out of their frames you need to replace them. If they are not, you don't.

In the UK if you start replacing them you need to bring them up to modern standards - not a cheap option in may cases and not likley to show enough energy savings to justify it. In that case you should opt for repairs if this is necessary.

Age is no guide, I am afraid. Most modern timber windows are made of sap wood which rots a treat if not maintained - which compares with 100 year old windows of good quality timber that are good for another century.
