Do a search from the BBOnline site: http://search.bbb.org/searchform.aspx

I like the Google idea.  For really bad sites, the critics appear higher in the results than the actual site!

If there a major store with regular stores  (target.com) then they are usually reliable, look for reviews when you do a search for them and remember if you don't feel comfortable buying from someone , even a gut feeling, then please don't buy from that site/

Do a google search for the site and see what comes up.  If it's a scam or a bad site, then there will be forums with complaints from people on it, or articles about  it.
