I was on vacation and returned to a plant taking over my back yard. It has yellow flowers and "fruit" that resembles watermelon. A friend said it looked like gourds. However, when I looked online it doesn't resemble either. The leaves resemble ivy. It is a self climber and the leaves are pale green. Can anyone help?

  1. It is very likely a citron melon.  They are thought to be the ancestors of our modern watermelons.  Do they look like this?

  2. Wait for it to get ripe and eat it!

Watermelon have lobed leaves, kind of oval outline.  Cantalope and gourds have entire edged leaves, no lobes.

It is possible its a wierd hybrid from some seeds a bird left behind.  It might be a cantalope or a watermelon or both at once.

  3. it might be a cantaloupe, they have yellow flowers and they climb and latch on to anything. they have these little squiggly, curly vine looking things that wrap around anything thats near. even other plants. or a cucumber, they do the same.
