  1. You just know, its like as you grow older, your pants no longer fits you.

  2. if you are running on windows 95 or millenium then u know you are outdated.........

  3. over 2.5GHz, usually dual processor,

    2GB+ DDR2 Ram

    PCIe slots

    usual specs

  4. If your Processor is under Core 2 duo your outdated.

If your RAM comes in MBs instead of GBs your def outdated.

Standard harddrives come in 120 or 360 GB worth of space.

  5. Your computer's not outdated unless you've got some specific software in mind - you've got to get the idea of "stuff" out of your mind or you'll always have a vague compulsion to upgrade.

Also keep in mind that there's a difference between really outdated and being able to run any new...um...stuff.

I Have a Dell Dimension 3000 - it's a good machine, has an HT CPU, a gig of RAM and a DVD burner.  It was never capable of running new games because it lacked an AGP port, bit it's not outdated because I can still surf the web, get my email, record and burn streaming audio, burn DVD's, etc.  It'll soon be hitting 3.5 years and will still have a contemporary OS that hosts current software.

Really outdated is an old Apple Powerbook.  It's a testament to reliabilitty - the screen is perfect, not a missing pixel.  As long as you boot up soon after recharge, the battery will keep things going for hours.  The DVD drive works.  It's not in physically the best condition, but everything works.  However, this really is an outdated machine - it probably won't run the new OSX very well (at all?) and therefore, it's stuck using an abandoned OS (OS 9 if you must know) for which nobody is coding an up-to-date browser.  The nostalgia of seeing the old Netscape logo swish as you wait to download th next page can go only so far....

What's the point of all this?  Not much - only you can say how out of date your machine is.  if your needs are conservative, even the old PB will do it for you (a working laptop w/a good screen, HD and battery for under $100?  Can't beat that...easily).

If you want a spanking brand new machine simply to satisfy that abstract compulsion to be able to run any new program, simply go on the websites for the big manufacturers, and hit the "price - no object" thingee and see what that buys you.

Things to keep in mind - memory makers are going to be looking to ditch DDR2 for DDR3 in a big way, that means a major price shift in the memory game.  Also, Intel's gone into a new nanometer architecture - so far that hasn't caused any price shifts in CPU's, though they've so widened the performance and market distance between themselves and AMD that that might change.

Just some stuff to keep in mind.

  6. Your PC is outdated when the requirements of new programs and games surpass your own system.  Usually your new computer is good for 3-4 years, but this depends on your need as well.

  7. a modern day computer for normal use should be like this,

    2.0Ghz dual core processor

    2 GB of RAM

    250GB or more hard drive.

a gaming computer for new games should be like this,

around 2.4Ghz dual core processor/quad core processor.

    around 3-4 GB of RAM

500 GB to 1TB Hard drive

    8/9 series Nvidia card.
