Question:

How do I know if my cat was really neutered?

I have a male cat that was over a year old when I got him and his sister from a relative of a coworker. They told me that both the cats were fixed, and I think the vet records confirmed this (although the writing was a little difficult to decipher). The cat is a medium sized short haired cat who weighs about fourteen or fifteen pounds. Recently I noticed what I would definitely consider to be balls on him, at least according to any other cats I've seen. Is it possible that it's just fat or something? He's still a rather agressive cat, not cuddly, always attacking his sister, yowling a lot, even at a few points we caught him humping his sister... but we've never really noticed spraying or anything like I would expect a full tomcat would do. So other than take him to the vet for confirmation, is there a sure way of knowing he was neutered like we were told? Are there any good pictures that show a neutered cat's genital area in comparison to an unneutered cat's?

  1. my cat is neutered and he definately does not have balls. However it may be that they just did a lousy job at the vets when it was done. (an intern would be a possibilty) My cat is 18 and has been neutered since 4 mo and to this day he sometimes geta amouros and frisky as if he was really horny. and he does get erect. God i know way too much about my cat! Anyway i asked my vet and he said that the procedure for the neutering is not always 100% Yes they may not spray or be able to reproduce and they may not exhibit any other sexual clues but they will still produce the chemicals neccessary for all of that. and if not done very concisely you have more of the sexual signs in some cats.

  2. Please do this little test...You have to touch them..

Do you feel two empty furry sacks ? Or do you feel two little marbles in there ?

Marbles ? Nope, not neutered...I suspect though that what you're seeing is just the little sacks.. :-)

  3. If he was intact, being a few years old his parts would be veeerrrry visible. Bigger than marbles, but smaller than a golf ball! If you're really up to it, a quick (but gentle of course) squeeze will confirm your findings. If there's anythign there you'll feel it. If not, they will just be empty sacs. If he was neutered later than 6 months, the sacs will always be fairly visible since his parts got so big before they were removed. Gross!

The agression may not be due to being un-neutered, some cats just don't like to snuggle. Humping.... well old habbits die hard!

  4. The vets leave the furry bits there but take out what's inside--so grit your teeth and go feel what's back there. If they're solid, the cat has NOT been neutered and is a full tom cat. If they're deflated, he's fixed and you don't have to worry.

Mounting is a dominance thing, dogs do it more than cats but cats do it occasionally.

If the cat has his balls, you'll have no question about it once they're felt. (And no, you're not a pervert for checking).
