Question:

How do I know if my home is gas oven compatible?

I have been looking for a gas oven as I'm sick of using electric hobs - moan.

What I really need to know is how I know if my flat has a gas line to fit the cooker? My eletric cooker is too heavy to pull out and look (even if I could pull it out I'm not sure if I would know what I'm looking at). My home has gas central heating and is a modern block in the UK. I can't get hold of my landlord to ask.

What's the difference between natural and propane gas - which one am I most likely to have?

  1. There should be a metal pipe or connection you can fix a pipe to.

Propane contains more energy per volume than natural gas.

You are most likely to have natural gas, which is fed to the house with underground pipes.

If you have a gas cylinder tank on the outside of your house then you have propane.

Make sure you buy the right cooker for the gas you have,if you already have a cooker, you can buy a conversion kit that will make it compatible.

  2. There should be a metal tube sticking out of the wall behind the stove, if there is a gas hook-up.

If there isn't a gas line there, but you have other gas appliances (clothes dryer or water heater), you can probably get a gas line in your kitchen.
