It's nothing special, just one of those standard 5-outlet ones. I've heard after a while you have to replace them and I'm not sure how old this one is.

  1. The cheap one's don't do much to protect anything.  They rely on the fact that most power in the US is really very good and the odd's of a power problem is slim.  Also on the consumer forgetting that there's supposed to be a warranty with them.  Surge protectors shouldn't wear out just from being plugged in.  If a surge hits, they should stop it and in doing so may sacrifice themselves to protect the more expensive/important equipment.  But unless you've had some power problems the surge protector should be fine.  But it is hard to determine if the protector is still good.  Certainly physical damage or indications of damage such as burned areas, signs of smoke from inside, or a burnt smell would mean it should be replaced.  If in doubt, replace it.  But I'd recommend a good one, such as a an Isobar by Tripp Lite.  They're good units with exceptional protection.  I used to work in a 2-way radio shop and they're all we ever used at remote sites with frequent power problems.
