The plants are quite tall and I can see where the cob is coming out of the sides of the stalk and there is the long hair bits and on one it is starting to go a bit brown but I don't think the actual sweetcorns are very big but maybe I wouldn't grow regular supermarket sizes? Anyone know?

  1. tassels turn dark-ears lay away-pull a little bit of husk away and take a look-stick with thumb nail check for plumpness -don't wait too long they will dry out

  2. At the tip of the sweetcorn is a wispy bit of corn silk. It's gold in colour. When that starts to die, then the corn is ready (approx mid sept)

If you have any urinary tract problems than the corn silk is superb at solving that problem.Drink it as a tea

  3. When the tassles go brown..also to keep in mind the next time you plant corn..to plant at least 4 rows for proper pollination and bigger ears..it is best to plant 4 or 5 rows of corn right together verses 1 or 2 in long rows..bunched up together like that they get a better pollination and fuller ears of corn..

  4. A few hints I use to judge.. Corn ear will "lean" out from its own weight.. The  silk  will of course be a dark brown and also dry..  Grab the thick base of the ear and squeeze.. It should feel full and firm.. Try this as the ears develop to get the feel of this.. It helps to know that way your not pealing back the husk and opening it .. GL  and enjoy your corn  and try making it on the grill just look up the way to do it...easy.. eliminates boiling  in the kitch on hot summer days
