Question:

How do I know if tennis is for me?

Hi all, I just wondered if any of you sports fanatics can tell me whether I am liable to like or loathe tennis based on my feelings towards the game itself.

I don't like watching Wimbledon as it bores me silly, and I have never really seen the fascination in the game, but yesterday I was watching the film Wimbledon with Kirsten Dunst and Paul Bettany and while watching it I felt genuine inspiration to start playing the game and since then I have researched a little into it and I would like to get myself a racket but they can be quite pricey so without spending alot of money on un-necessary equipment is there anyway of finding out if it is for me? I am 25 and have just had a baby so I have a little pregnancy weight to lose and I am hoping that tennis might be able to help with this? It also looks like a good way to relieve tension?!

Any constructive advice any of you may have would be much appreciated.

  1. Anyone can play tennis.  Not anyone can become a pro, but anyone can play.  You should start out with a cheap racket and then as you get more into it you should get a better one.  Tennis makes you forget all your worries.  Tennis is a great way to excersize.  Hope this helps.

  2. Do you like tennis? There you go.

  3. Hey,

You could just try tennis first. That way you could get a little idea of whether you would enjoy it or hate it. Just go down to your local sports centre. You can book a court and hire a racket. Then if you enjoy it you could buy your own equipment.

If you decide you like playing tennis you can go and buy a racket and tennis balls. There are some good quality rackets on ebay, you could buy a second hand one if you dont really want to spend too much, and tennis balls are not too pricey. If you want to play tennis you're looking at about £3 for tennis balls and about £10 - £15 for a nice racket.

Tennis will definatley help you to lose a little weight from your pregnancy. And it can relieve tension too. I'd definatley recommend tennis, it's rather good. You could also try badminton. I presonally prefer playing badminton.

  4. its easy 2 adapt 2 new sports, if you like it that much it should be easy

  5. Tennis is for everyone.

Social life, great exercise -you don't even realize how long you've been playing its so fun, great for your lungs, and its just fun.

  6. You won't know until you actually get out on a court and play.

It may be frustrating at first since you've never really played before so I suggest you take a group lesson somewhere.

You'll learn the proper way to hold and racquet and stroke the ball.

I'd say that it will take a few lessons and a couple of practices before you're ready to make a determination on whether tennis is really for you. Just don't give up right away because the ball's not going where you want it to.

With improvement come satisfaction and building interest.

You could borrow a racquet to start with or pick one up for around $40.00 at Costco or Target. If you really like the game, you can always invest in a more expensive racquet.

Lots of people who don't like watching tennis on television don't play but if you do become a player, you'll certainly enjoying watching it more.

Paul Bettany had to go through lots of instruction to get him to look like a pro player for the movie.

  7. Playing tennis and watching tennis are different. You might want to try it out and see if you like it before you dedicate yourself to it. Maybe sign up for lessons or an informal class. Who knows? You might really like it and play well.

Wait you are inspired to play tennis b/c of that crappy movie? Oh gosh. And this was more of interest to you than this years final?

  8. lol well if you find the real wimbledon boring but the film wimbledon inspiring then i fear youre singing off a very different hymn sheet to me

  9. haha  just try tennis and I LOVE THAT MOVIE!!!!!!!
