How do I know if the cigarette lighter in my car is working?

It doesn't get hot, but I want to know if it would still work for powering my car cell phone charger thingy.

you could check it with a digital multimeter, or just plug in your phone, if it's broken nothing will happen, if it works your phone will tell you it's charging.

go to the auto part store  and  get  another  lighter  they  are  only  a  few  bucks  your  phone  has  nothing  to  do  with  it  not  getting  hot

it should get hot, if not, may be dirty contacts or blown fuse, check the fuse, and also plug something into it and see if it works.

car cell phone chargers usually have a little light on them to let you know its getting power

You can always just try and light a cigarette with it.  If it's lit, then it's working.

If it doesnt get hot then the the connection obviously doesnt work. And if it doesnt work there shouldnt be any reason why something else should. However check your fuse, if its damaged that is an easy fix.

If the cigarette can't be lit from the lighter then you have some sort of electrical problem and no, it won't power anything.  Check the fuse box - you probably just have a blown fuse, which is quick and easy to replace.  If it's not that you could take the car in to a shop (to make sure that it's not more than just a problem with the cigarette lighter) or just charge your phone at home.

go to like an auto parts store and buy and new lighter and see if it works and also check your fuses

Well if it isn't getting hot, the fuse is probably blown, and it is a commonly blown fuse, so if you go to a nearby auto parts store, I am sure they would have it.  

So if the fuse is blown then, obviously, no your cell phone will not charge.

have you tried pluging it in and watch the light blink on...mine shows its charging when it is charging.. you can get a new lighter plug for 5 bucks just about every store in the auto  section or any auto parts place.. you can check the fuse you can replace whole unit for like 20 bucks or less
