I want to use Wilton's Three-tier floating cake stand (http://www.wilton.com/store/site/product.cfm?id=53DB6018-423B-522D-F3485F050603680D&fid=53DB6028-423B-522D-FBD0DB93D4F0D688). It holds cakes sized 6, 10, and 14 inches. I've looked at the cutting guide but am not sure if this will be enough for 150 people. I'm not worried about saving the top tier; I would prefer to serve it as well. How do I know how much cake I really need?

  1. I would go to the bakery you are planning to purchase from and ask.  That's probably one of their most asked questions - it seems like a very important thing to know.

Tell them the size of each layer and they should be able to tell you if you will have enough.

You could also order an extra, solid colour sheet cake that guests won't see to be served if it won't be enough cake on the tiers.  The caterer can just cut the sheet cake up in the back.  Guests will never know the difference!

  2. That is what your baker is for. Do not attempt to make a tiered cake on your wedding day if you have no experience. Even professional bakers who have been in the business for years know better than to attempt that, just for the reason of time and sanity. You will have to bake it on the day of the wedding to keep it fresh and you will not have time to do anything of the sort the last few days.

Just go to the local grocery bakery, get several round cakes and decorate them.

Also, how much cake you need depends on how big or small the slices are. Wedding cake slices are microscopic and paperthin which is why they say that the same amount of cake that would serve 10-12 people at a picnic or birthday party will somehow serve 100+ at a wedding.

  3. I think the 6 typically serves around 12 people and the 10 will serve around 35 or so. I'm not sure about the 14. Just talk to the person that's going to make it, they'll know! If it's close, but you really want that cake stand, I'd recommend making sheet cakes to supplement. They're cheaper, and they don't have to be displayed, just get them out in time to cut them and serve them. You could probably do the cake you want, and one sheet cake.

  4. It will be enough, if you make double, or even triple layered cake (cake, filling, cake, filling, cake). Wedding cake slices are typically smaller than party slices.

I have always loathed the sheet cake idea; that is like saying to your guests, I hope you don't mind having the cheap cake; you're not worth the price of the real cake.

  5. According to Wilton's Website, the cake sizes 6, 10 and 14 would serve approximately 116 people. I had 300 guests at my reception, and bought enough cake for 275 and I still came home with almost 1/2 the cake that we had. A lot of people don't want cake at the reception for a variety of reasons, but i totally understand not wanting to run out of cake too! I would buy the cake stand and have the cakes made for it, and if you are worried, buy an extra 1/2 sheet cake if you run out.

    Good Luck and Congratulations!
